Dr. Ren Massey and faculty comprised of 12 psychologists, psychiatrists, primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and surgeons volunteered their time for a week in Hanoi, Vietnam to train over 130 varied healthcare professionals in mental health, hormonal, and surgical care of transgender and gender diverse (T/GD) patients.

What If My Child Wants Clothes and a
Name that Doesn’t Match Their Sex?

Parents face issues – rarely considered years ago – if their child is questioning their gender identity and behaving in ways not typical of what is expected of their sex. Can children know their gender identity? If I want to help my child explore or express a different gender identity, how do I go about this? Is this going to confuse my child later?

Some of these questions are being answered directly and indirectly by research. Additionally, the clinical experience of experts in the field of gender identity addresses these concerns. This blog will focus on children who have not yet gone through, or are early in, puberty and their gender identities.

Twice monthly podcast focusing on mental health and its treatment hosted by Psychologist Dr. Zachary Friedman. In this show Dr. Friedman talks with clinical psychologist Dr. Ren Massey about doing therapy with transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. We talk about being mindful of use of terms in sessions, the crossover between medical and psychological knowledge in this work, and what it means to be competent when working with transgender individuals. We also talk about the importance of safety in the therapy room and how the current political climate has impacted working with transgender and gender-nonconforming folks. Dr. Massey also talks about how he came to specialize in this area. And we talk about more fictional characters we want to see in therapy including Harry Potter and the film A Star Is Born!
